It’s All In The Prep: How To Prep Your Skin For Better Makeup Application

Did you know that the secret trick for flawless makeup happens before you even pick up that foundation brush?

That’s right – we’re talking about skin prep. Many of us diligently follow a multi-step skincare routine at night, but if we don’t take the time to prepare skin properly before applying cosmetics, our makeup might not last as long as we’d hoped.

We’ll walk you through why prepping your skin properly is so important, how to lock in your makeup look all day long and a step-by-step guide to the best products to use – along with the optimal order to apply them in.

Why should I prep my skin before makeup?

The truth is, even if you invest in the highest-quality cosmetics, they won’t adhere very well if your skin isn’t clean, smooth and hydrated. Think of skincare and primer as a crucial step in achieving your look – like preparing a canvas before you create your masterpiece.

Your step-by-step guide to perfectly primed skin

On the list? Cleansing, exfoliating, toning, moisturising and priming – then onto your makeup application!

Step One: Cleanse

First things first – let’s start with clean skin. Use a gentle cleanser, such as No7 Hot Cloth Cleanser, to sweep away dirt, oil and impurities, then pat skin dry.

Step Two: Exfoliate & Tone

Next on the list? It’s time to exfoliate and tone.

Even on clean skin, dead cells can build up over time, blocking pores and creating a dull, rough texture. The goal for this step is to create a smooth canvas for makeup to grip onto, while enabling hydrating products to penetrate into the skin and plump from the inside out.

All skin types can benefit from exfoliation. If you have dry skin, exfoliating can slough off rough or flaky patches, while oilier complexions can benefit from minimized pores.

A physical exfoliator, such as a scrub, can help to slough away dead skin cells. Try gently massaging No7 Radiance+ Daily Energising Exfoliating Cleanser onto damp skin before rinsing well.

A chemical exfoliator, such as an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) can be a great option if you find scrubs too harsh. Try No7 Radiance+ Vitamin C Glow Toner to brighten and revitalise your skin. Simply sweep over clean skin using a cotton pad.

One thing to note – if you have sensitive skin, be sure to do a patch test in case you experience irritation.

Step Three: Moisturise

Moisturising is absolutely essential to achieving smooth, plump skin.

Target fine lines and wrinkles while hydrating for 24 hours with Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Day Cream, or try Radiance+ Vitamin C Daily Brightening Moisturiser to illuminate and nourish.

Don’t overlook your lips! A quick slick of Protect & Perfect Lip Care delivers a hit of hydration, ensuring a smooth, silky base for lipstick or gloss.

Step Four: Prime

Last on the to-do list? Primer. This step helps to create a smooth, even base for your face makeup, and helps it to stay in place for longer.

Look for a primer that is formulated to target your specific skin concerns from the No7 Airbrush Away range. Try our Pore Minimising Primer, Colour Balancing Primer, or Radiance Boosting Primer.

What else can I do to lock in my makeup application?

So your skin is prepped and it’s time to apply your makeup! Once you’re happy with your look, a setting spray can help to fix it into place. If you’re after a matte finish, try No7 Stay Perfect Matte Fixing Mist, while those looking to add radiance can opt for a spritz of No7 HydraLuminous Hydrating Fixing Mist.
