There’s nothing worse than waking up after a long and relaxing night’s sleep, only to be met with puffy eyes that make you look like you’ve had none at all. Whether it’s a one-off or a regular occurrence, puffy eyes are something we’ve all had to deal with at one time or another. But what causes them and what can you do to combat their appearance?

What causes puffy eyes?

Puffy eyes are caused by an accumulation of fluids in the skin tissue around your eye area. As the skin in this area is so thin and delicate, particularly underneath your eye, this fluid causes irritation which then makes the skin swell and sometimes become discoloured. The reason this fluid builds up differs considerably from person to person and can vary from simple genetics to stress or even eating too much salt.

Forgetting to remove your make-up before bed is another reason you might have puffy under eyes. We know we should always wash and cleanse our face but that doesn’t mean that we don’t sometimes forget. However, failing to remove your make-up, especially from the eye area, can cause irritation and block the glands around your eyes, causing them to become swollen during the night. While it can sometimes seem like a lot of effort, it’s always worth taking a few minutes to make sure your skin is free of make-up before bed.

If you’re using products around the eye area that contain harsh chemicals or alcohols that don’t agree with your skin type, you could be doing more harm than good. This damage can make the already-delicate area even more sensitive, which can lead to redness, swelling, and puffiness. If you think your products may be irritating your eyes, try to work out which one it is and stop using it immediately.

Dry skin types may find that the eyes are particularly parched first thing in the morning. If you aren’t providing your skin with enough hydration and nourishment, your eye area may become even more dry and sensitive, encouraging signs of ageing as well as puffiness.
