Step 2. Moisturise.
Hydrated skin means happy skin, and happy skin means a more comfortable fit for your foundation. Moisture is key to ensure that your make-up doesn’t settle into fine lines, or cake on the face so it’s important to find the right moisturiser for your skin’s needs. For a drier complexion, use a richer cream or oil, and for oilier skin, a mattifying lotion.

Step 3. Prime.
Often overlooked, priming can make all the difference to the finish off your foundation. Primers can help minimise larger pores, banish oiliness or discoloration and blur imperfections for a truly blemish-free appearance.

Step 4. Apply.
Now, this may seem simple but there is a knack to it. According to top beauty experts, the trick is to apply sparingly, using only on the areas of your face that need it most. This usually means starting at the centre and working your way out towards your jaw and hairline. Whether you use a sponge, brush, fingertips or anything else in-between, it’s important to pat – not brush – the formula on. This way you can build up coverage smoothly if and where you want it most, without it looking thick or streaky on your skin.

Step 5. Set.
Setting sprays or powders really help in maintaining and prolonging a natural, flawless finish. First, blot your skin to rid it of any unwanted or unneeded coverage and, if opting for a powder, use a brush to apply a very light layer to areas that get the shiniest – think foreheads, nose and chin. For a spray, hold the bottle 6 to 7 inches away from the face and mist, applying using an X and a T-shaped motion, ensuring you cover your whole face.

Step 6. Check.
If you’ve been applying your make-up in a bedroom or a bathroom, it’s important to remember to always check your foundation in a natural light afterwards. If you can, step in front of a window with a hand-held mirror and check for streakiness and unevenness to ensure a perfectly flawless finish.
