4I bought 3 of these Amazing eyes pencils and returned them a month later as they were useless - like previous reviewers, I found they dragged the skin around my eye and it was really hard to get any colour from them. When I returned them to the store, the No 7 girls explained that the tip is coated with wax to protect it, so before first use you have to use a pencil sharpener to take the layer of wax off - and then, hey presto, it worked beautifully, so I no longer needed to return them. No-one tells you this when you buy the pencils!!

Now truly awful
1I don't know what Boots has done to its eye-liner pencils, but they are now hard like a child's colouring pencil and nearly impossible to apply. I have tried pre-scribbling on my hand and on a piece of paper, applying it with moisturiser, wetting the tip first, sharpening the pencil down further, but to no avail. They simply tear at your skin and do little. I bought another thinking I had just been unlucky, but it was the same. I found the stump of an old one in my makeup bag, and it was, as I remembered: creamy, easy to apply and very effective. That one was a proper wooden pencil, unlike the reconstituted plastic shafts now used. Boots have clearly long since changed their 'recipe'. These pencils are now truly awful. My mother had found the same and already thrown hers out. I will not be buying another, but searching for an alternative brand. I recommend people stay well away.

Sharpen it and it looks brilliant, goes on well, lasts ages
5This is in fact a great eyeliner. Looks good, lasts ages, goes on very smoothly. Can be worn either as slick line or as smudgier line. When I first bought it I too had the issues reported by other reviewers and was annoyed that I had forked out for an eyeliner that didn't in fact draw a line at all, even after repeated attempts! Like a pen with no ink in it. It didn't need to be sharpened, as the pencil had a tip. But then the tip broke off in my bag and I sharpened it - et voila, I found the key to this liner. Sharpen it before use, even if it doesn't seem to need it. Perhaps the material dries out quickly. Anyway, if you don't sharpen it, it doesn't draw a line. But once you sharpen it it glides on smoothly and lasts all day. In fact it's better than other "long-lasting" eyeliners I have tried by the likes of Dior/ Clinique/ Lancome/ Bobbi Brown etc. As it looks very intense on and is smooth to apply. No smudging unless you deliberately smudge it a bit to create a smokier look. So here I am back again to buy a new one.

I really have to disagree.....
5I bought this pencil in brown to replace my usual daily eyeliner purely because it was on offer and No 7 make up is usually high quality. I hadn't read the reviews on here for the product but did when I got home and was very worried that I had just wasted my money. I have to say that I completely disagree with most of the reviews posted as I have found this to be a very effective eyeliner. It applies smoothly and defines the eyes perfectly with the colour showing up immediately. It doesn't crumble or break on sharpening as some eye liners do and so overall I am very happy!

Was a devotee
1No7 what has happend to your once georgous eye pencil! I have been a devotee of this eye pencil since probably 2005! and i especially loved your brown colour as it was an unusual flattering smoky brown that i can not find anywhere else. I basically thought i must have brought a duff one a few months back but after reading another review with the same problem i now know not. It basically must have some sort of split going all the way through the pencil so when you sharpen it the sharp tip of the pencil crumbles away as soon as you try to apply it so you end uo having to keep sharpening it. This pencil used to last me about 6months, now because of the constant shrapening to no avail barley 2 months. Plus you really have to drag it on the skin to get any pencil action. It used to go on so smoothly with ease and was never too smugey soft or too hard and long wearing. It is a real shame for your pencil fans. Like another customer said if it ain't broke don't fix it. Hopefully this is something that you are aware of and aim to correct no7. Or else sales of eye pencil will go up elsewhere.

Worst Ever!
1Unbelievably poor! It's like trying to write an essay using a pencil without lead! Looks the part, but after stretchhhhhhhhing my poor eyelid to its extreme and then presssssssssing down as hard as possible, I'm lucky if I can see the faintest of lines. An absolute waste of money and complete let down.

Not like it used to be
2Don't know why they have changed a perfectly good eye pencil to this plastic item that doesn't leave enough colour on the eye as it used to.

Not that bad!
4I haven't read one good review on this so I played devil's advocate and bought one on the basis that I liked the look of it. The main criticism seems to be that it hard on the eyes. When I first used it I couldn't get it to work, however once I had rubbed the tip with a cotton wool, it actually went on easily, maybe it has a coating on it new? It probably helps to warm the tip between your lips for a few seconds. Secondly, I like the wood, or whatever it is? It looks like plastic the the good thing is that when you sharpen it it sharpens really cleanly unlike some woody ones which just seems to break the tip. The tip hasn't been blotchy and it has not crumbled yet so fingers crossed!

Not impressed
1I hate to say this because I love No7! This product is awful! I have to press down really hard to use it (which bruises my eyes) and even then it hardly shows up and it flakes. It's not worth the money and I would not buy this product again. Sorry No7!
