How To Make Your Foundation Look Natural

We consider foundation to be a make-up bag essential.

Perfect for a flawless finish, a blemish-free complexion, and delivering that little boost of radiance whenever you need it.

The question is, however, what do you do if you want the coverage with none of the heaviness?

A natural-looking finish is one of the most sought-after qualities in a foundation, with many people preferring a formula that lightly covers imperfections and evens skin tone whilst still looking like – well – skin. Using the correct techniques to apply foundation is a delicate process, but here are a few simple steps to follow for a lightweight, naturally perfected make-up look.

Step 1. Your Skin & You.

Everyone’s skin is different.

That’s what makes it beautiful.

Whether yours be dry or oily, freckly or moley, blemish-free or prone to breakouts, it’s time to get to know it. There’s a plethora of formulas out there, so take time to do some research and find the best match for your skin type.

Step 2. Prep.

It’s no surprise that skincare and make-up routines go hand in hand, so we recommend using an exfoliator first and foremost to buff away any dead skin cells and to bring your inner radiance to the surface. Follow with your usual skincare routine – the full works. We’re talking toner, moisturiser and primer so that your foundation has a comfortable and hydrated base to sit on.

Step 3. Conceal.

If you’re opting for a natural-looking finish, then foundation alone won’t cover stubborn imperfections. Instead, before you apply the foundation, dab small dots on any problem areas. By applying concealer straight to skin, it binds more smoothly and thus prevents creasing throughout the day.

Step 4. Apply.

Now, this may seem simple but there is a knack to it. According to top beauty experts, the trick is to apply sparingly, using only on the areas of your face that need it most. This usually means starting at the centre and working your way out towards your jaw and hairline.

Use a damp sponge.

Using dabbing techniques, blot the foundation around your face instead of painting it on. It helps blend it seamlessly, evenly into your skin for a naturally perfected complexion that’s streak-free and smooth.

Step 5. Set

Setting sprays or powders really help in maintaining and prolonging a natural, flawless finish. First, blot your skin to rid it of any unwanted or unneeded coverage and, if opting for a powder, use a brush to apply a very light layer to areas that get the shiniest – think foreheads, nose and chin. For a spray, hold the bottle 6 to 7 inches away from the face and mist, applying using an X and a T-shaped motion, ensuring you cover your whole face.

Step 6. Check.

If you’ve been applying your make-up in a bedroom or a bathroom, it’s important to remember to always check your foundation in a natural light afterwards. If you can, step in front of a window with a hand-held mirror and check for streakiness and unevenness to ensure a perfectly flawless finish.
