Make-Up Expires? The Ultimate Guide to Cosmetic Expiration

We all have that one make-up product we can’t bear to part with. From our first eyeshadow palette to the tiny lip liner we’re still trying to sharpen, it can be hard to let go. But keeping make-up past the expiry date can lead to skin irritation or infections, which nobody wants. We talk you through all you need to know about expired make-up and remind you when it’s time to bin your beauty buys.

Why does make-up expire?

Make-up that’s being used regularly can trap bacteria, dirt and oils over time, which can cause the product to change in consistency, irritate your skin or even grow mould.

Replacing your products after their expiry date will help you avoid breakouts, rushes, bumps, burning sensations and eye infections.

What are the signs of expired make-up?

It’s pretty easy to check for make-up that’s expired. When you notice the oil rise to the top of a liquid product, or the consistency changes, that’s a clear sign that it is past its prime.

If a hard film develops on the top of powders, blushers and bronzers, it’s time to move on. This has been caused by the bacteria and oils from your skin transferring into the product and then solidifying.

Where can I find make-up expiry dates?

Ever noticed a little symbol on the back of your make-up that looks like a little tub? The number inside that tub tells you how many months your product will last after being opened.

Product expiry dates

Foundation and concealer

Water-based foundations and concealers will last up to 12 months, whereas oil-based concealers can last up to 18 months as oil is a natural preservative.

Powder, blusher and bronzer

As powder products don’t contain any water, it’s harder for bacteria to grow. For this reason, most powder make-up products will have a shelf life of between 18 months and two years.

Eyeshadow

As they are used close to your eyes, it’s recommended to only use eyeshadows for up to 18 months once opened.

Mascara

This is probably the most important expiry date to pay attention to. As bacteria naturally lives on our eyelashes, it can very quickly be transferred to the mascara wand and into the tube of product. For this reason, it’s recommended to replace your mascara every three months if you use it every day, or six months if you use it occasionally.

Eyeliners and brow pencils

Just like mascara, liquid eyeliners and eyebrow products should only be used for three to six months to avoid irritation. However, pencil eyeliners can last up to three years – this is because regular sharpening will help remove any bacteria build up.

Lipstick and lipgloss

Lipsticks and lipglosses are usually packed with preservatives like essential oils and vitamins that will help protect them from bacteria, but these will naturally break down after around 12 to 18 months.

Make-up tools

Make-up brushes can last you years, as long as you take good care of them. If you notice that they don’t quite work the same as they used to, or bristles begin to fall out, it’s time to look at replacing them. Make-up sponges should be replaced every one to three months.

Also, regularly cleaning your make-up brushes will remove dirt and bacteria build up, and help your products last longer too.

Can I make my make-up last any longer?

Using expired make-up is not recommended, but to help your favourite products go the distance, keep lids on tight and store them in cool, dark and dry place. Shake your liquid products frequently to keep the oils, water and make-up particles together.
