Looking for easy application and a flawless finish? The right makeup brushes can help you get the most out of your makeup application, as well as making applying products even easier. That’s why, whether you use your makeup brushes daily or just a few times a week, it’s important to look after them properly.
why should you wash your makeup brushes?
It might not be something you think to do often (or at all) but it’s important to keep your makeup brushes clean by washing them regularly.
Your makeup brushes will be gathering product residue, oil, dead skin cells and bacteria which then comes into contact with your skin each time you use them. This could make your complexion more susceptible to breakouts and clogged pores.
How to correctly wash your makeup brushes
So, how do you wash your makeup brushes? We’re glad you asked.
To keep your makeup brushes clean and in good condition, cleanse them once a week with antibacterial soap or a specially formulated makeup brush cleanser like No7 Make Up Brush Cleanser.
Use the cleanser to gently work the brush bristles into a lather, being careful not to get the base of the brush handle wet (this can affect the glue that holds the bristles in place). Rinse each brush under warm running water until all the cleanser has been washed out and the water runs clear. Then, lay them flat on a clean towel or kitchen roll to air dry.
Top tip: Leave your brushes overnight to ensure they’re fully dry before you use them.
If you have sensitive skin and are worried about reacting to a brush cleansing product, try washing your makeup brushes with your daily cleanser or face wash instead, as you already know this doesn’t irritate your skin.
If you use your makeup brushes every day, or have blemish and breakout-prone skin, consider cleaning them once a week. If you use your makeup brushes less regularly, aim to clean them once every two weeks.
How often should you replace your makeup brushes?
Makeup brushes are often made of synthetic materials. With the right care and regular cleaning, they should last you a long time.
Experts recommend replacing your makeup brushes every one to two years. However, if they haven’t been washed often enough and you notice the bristles are stiff, oily or have a build-up of product that won’t wash out, you may need to replace them sooner.
Why are brushes an essential in your makeup kit?
Makeup application is a very personal ritual, and the way you decide to do your makeup is completely up to you. Applying makeup with (clean) fingers can be handy if you’re on the go, but makeup brushes can offer better coverage and precision, and a more professional finish.
